The Chicago Tribune reported a Chicago car accident that killed a 25-year old man early in the morning of January 10, 2011. Shawn Garrett was apparently headed eastbound down East 69th street with two passengers in his car; at the same time a police SUV cruiser was traveling down South Indiana Avenue.
The police car’s emergency lights were activated as he and his partner responded to a south side call. While the reasons are as yet unknown, Mr. Garrett ran the red light in front of him, causing him to collide with the police car. After colliding with the police cruiser, the victim’s car then slammed into a pole, causing the death of Shawn Garrett and serious injuries to the two passengers in his car who remain in critical condition.
The accident occurred at 2:00 a.m., and Mr. Garrett was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at approximately 2:50 a.m. The two officers in the SUV were treated for minor injuries and released.
The victim leaves behind nine children and a family who remains confused regarding the exact cause of the crash. Ashley Watters, mother to four of Garrett’s children, was contacted at the home of her grandmother where she resides.
Ms. Watters stated she had known Shawn since grammar school and that he was a really good father. Other relatives of Shawn’s were frustrated by the police account of the crash, and have hopes a full investigation will reveal the precise events which led to the deadly collision. Garrett’s father stated he wanted a full investigation so he could finally know exactly what happened to his son.
